YouTube announced that it had 1 billion unique monthly viewers on Thursday. Google, which owns YouTube, said that if the site were a country, it would be the third most populous in the world; Mountain View’s internal stats showed that more half of the people on the internet use YouTube at least once a month. Google attributed the uptick to Generation C, Nielsen-branded name for the 18-to-34 year old demographic — the “C” stands for “Connectivity”. Their viewing habits include less than two hours of television and multiple screens. 78% of them own smartphones (as opposed to 60% of the general population). According to Google, 67% of Generation C watches YouTube on two or more devices.Google’s focus on The mention of Generation C  is a departure: the marketing world is focused on Generation Z, those born in the early 2000s. A plethora of articles have been written on how to capture their attention. Advertising agencies have spent the past few years coming up with innovative ways to target Generation Z (e.g. The Lorax Facebook campaign). But when Nielsen coined the concept of Generation C in February 2012, the reaction was a skeptical one. The age group, critics of the new term said, was too broad to allow for a singular marketing strategy —  the entire world now being, as it is, connected.Still, statistics showed that Generation C was more connected than the general population. Americans ages 18 to 34 represent 39% of smartphone owners, 33% of tablet owners, and 27% of online video views even though they make up just 23% of the population. And while a focus on generation C as a target audience might be misplaced, the term could be useful is deciding on a platform to reach users through. The younger and older segments of Generation C might respond to different skincare products, but their response to memes can be similar: the Harlem Shake video that was recreated in dorm rooms and offices alike. An example of successful campaign marketing based on Generation C viewing habits: the Coca-Cola Chok! Chok! Chok! campaign that ran in Hong Kong 2011 and was revisited in 2013. The commercial was viewed 9 million times and the associated app was downloaded 380,000. 15% of Generation C members tune into their smartphones during commercial breaks, and this campaign’s success came from engaging them on the smartphone while the brand’s ad ran on TV. Viewers could redeem prizes if they succeeded in virtually catching the bottle caps that flew in the air during the commercial. (“Chok” means rapid motion in Cantonese slang.) Since those fourth-wall-breaking ads ran, there have been many attempts at engaging users via the second screen. None, however, have been as innovative as Coca-Cola’s, meaning advertisers have more catching up to do, and in short order.
